Monday's NFL injury and roster news for Week 17

The Miami Dolphins will head into a must-win game this Sunday without wide receiver Jakeem Grant.

After suffering a high-ankle sprain in Saturday night's dramatic win over the Las Vegas Raiders, Grant will be held out vs. the Buffalo Bills in Week 17, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports, per a source.

Rapoport adds that Grant landing on injured reserve is a possibility.

Grant has 36 catches for 373 yards and one touchdown on the season. Serving as the Dolphins punt and kick return specialist, Grant added another score on special teams this season and averages a league-leading 11.4 yards per punt return.

Rookie wideout Malcolm Perry is slated to fill in for Grant on punt returns on the Dolphins depth chart while rookie cornerback Noah Igbinoghene will field the kickoffs.

The Dolphins can clinch a playoff spot with a win in Buffalo.

• Cam Newton was replaced at quarterback for the New England Patriots by Jarrett Stidham midway through the third quarter with the Pats trailing the Bills by 22 points. Patriots DB Devin McCourty (shoulder), offensive lineman Shaq Mason (foot) and defensive lineman Tashawn Bower (neck) were ruled out in the fourth quarter. The Patriots did not activate wide receiver Julian Edelman from injured reserve Monday. It's unlikely Edelman plays next week, meaning the 34-year-old's season is almost certainly over, Rapoport reported. The team announced that it has activated linebacker Cassh Maluia and defensive lineman Nick Thurman to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. In addition, the Patriots signed center Marcus Martin to the 53-man roster.
• The Washington Football Team has waived quarterback Dwayne Haskins, sources tell Rapoport and NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Washington head coach Ron Rivera told reporters that he's optimistic about the return of quarterback Alex Smith (calf) this Sunday. Smith has missed Washington's last two games, both of which were defeats with Haskins at QB. Rivera also revealed that Taylor Heinicke would not only be Smith's backup vs. the Eagles, but would be the starting QB if the veteran cannot play. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin is also in walking boot thanks to a high-ankle sprain, according to Rivera. The injury kept Washington's top wideout out of Week 16.
• Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff underwent surgery on his right thumb Monday night and is hopeful of returning for the playoffs, should the Rams advance, Rapoport reported. Goff suffered a dislocated/fractured thumb on his throwing hand in Sunday's loss to Seattle. Coach Sean McVay confirmed quarterback John Wolford will start. Rams running back Darrell Henderson will be placed on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain, McVay said. The coach added Cam Akers (ankle) could be available Sunday. McVay also announced the plan for left tackle Andrew Whitworth is for him to return to practice this week with a 21-day window to activate him to the 53-man roster. Whitworth has been sidelined with a knee injury.
• Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule says he's "probably leaning towards no" when it comes to Christian McCaffrey's availability this week but he will know more on Wednesday. McCaffrey (thigh) hasn't played since Week 9 and has only appeared in three games during what has been an injury-laden 2020 season.
• The Buffalo Bills have activated wide receiver John Brown from injured reserve and placed Brown, practice squad safety Josh Thomas and practice squad running back Christian Wade on the reserve/COVID list after it was determined they were high-risk close contacts to RB T.J. Yeldon, who tested positive for COVID-19. The Bills elevated quarterback Davis Webb ahead of Monday night's game vs. the Patriots.
• Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians says he hopes Ronald Jones will clear COVID-19 protocol soon so the running back can test his broken finger in Week 17 and get prepared for the playoffs. Arians also said he had no plans to rest starters Sunday even though his team has clinched a playoff berth. "We're going to play to win," Arians said. "We're going to practice and pretend like everything depends on it."
• Houston Texans coach Romeo Crennel told reporters that quarterback Deshaun Watson (elbow) will play in Week 17 if cleared by the team's medical staff. Watson hurt his right arm on a play where he was sacked, but managed to finish Sunday's loss to the Bengals.
• New York Jets coach Adam Gase ruled out Frank Gore for Sunday's season finale due to a lung contusion. Gore, 37, finishes the year with 653 rushing yards and two touchdowns. In Sunday's win over the Browns, Gore became the third player in NFL history to log 16,000 career rushing yards.
• Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters that there is a good chance Chad Henne will start over Patrick Mahomes and other starters will sit Week 17 vs. the Chargers after K.C. clinched homefield advantage in the AFC playoffs Sunday. In other Chiefs news, Rapoport reports that Sammy Watkins' calf injury is not believed to be serious, though he'll likely sit this Sunday.
• New York Giants coach Joe Judge says he's optimistic about tight end Evan Engram's availability for Sunday, but he still has to meet with doctors. Engram hurt his ankle in Sunday's loss to the Ravens.
• Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon (foot) will not play in Week 17. Mixon had been on injured reserve because of the foot injury and hasn't played since Week 6.
• The Detroit Lions are releasing veteran safety Jayron Kearse, per Rapoport. The team later confirmed Kearse's release. Kearse started seven games this season and could be a depth addition for a potential playoff team.
• The Baltimore Ravens waived safety Geno Stone.
• The Cleveland Browns signed wide receiver Alexander Hollins off of the Vikings practice squad.
• The Seattle Seahawks announced they have waived defensive tackle Damon Harrison.
• Indianapolis Colts coach Frank Reich said safety Khari Willis and wideoutMichael Pittman are in the concussion protocol.
• The Tennessee Titans announced they have placed kicker Stephen Gostkowski on the team's Reserve/COVID-19 list.
• San Francisco 49ers wideout Brandon Aiyuk suffered a high ankle sprain in Saturday's game and offensive tackle Trent Williams has a sprained elbow. Both will miss the season finale, coach Kyle Shanahan announced. Shanahan added it's very unlikely quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (ankle) would play Sunday and once again stated he believes Garoppolo will be the team's quarterback next year. CB Richard Sherman (calf) will also miss the finale. The team announced running back Austin Walter has been activated off the reserve/COVID-19 List. Fullback Josh Hokit has been restored to the team's practice squad from the practice squad/COVID-19 List. Offensive lineman Hroniss Grasu and long snapper Taybor Pepper have been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list.
