Cardinals RB James Conner to undergo ankle surgery, out indefinitely

James Conner's season is in jeopardy after he was carted off the field on Sunday with a serious ankle injury.

The Arizona Cardinals running back will undergo surgery and is expected to be out indefinitely, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday night.

Conner, 30, is still undergoing tests to determine the full extent of the injury, Rapoport added.

Conner, who's in his fifth season with Arizona, was hit high and low simultaneously on a carry early in the third quarter during the Cardinals' 16-15 loss to the San Francisco 49ers with his right leg gruesomely bending inward.

Shortly after, Conner was carted off the field, clearly emotional as players from each team surrounded him.

It's a major loss for the 2-1 Cardinals on the field and off, as Conner is one of the team's veteran leaders. On Sunday, Conner had nine carries for 22 yards, giving him 95 on 32 carries for the season.

Second-year back Trey Benson was the team's leading ground gainer entering Week 2 and the top rusher on Sunday, as well. Through three games, he's carried the ball 21 times for 125 yards.

Can Benson handle a workhorse role moving forward? Will he need to, or will the Cardinals employ more snaps for Emari Demercado?

The Cardinals have a dearth of RB depth, making this an ever larger loss after a heartbreaking defeat to the 49ers.
