The NFL announced on Sunday that it has placed Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs on the Commissioner's Exempt List.
Jacobs is not permitted to practice or attend games while on the list.
The news comes as Jacobs faces misdemeanor charges of battery and criminal damage to property stemming from what police described as a physical confrontation with his girlfriend.
The formal charges, announced Thursday by Brown County (Wisc.) District Attorney David Lasee, stem from a May arrest in which he was initially booked on five counts, including felony strangulation.
"Josh Jacobs has been placed on the Commissioner's Exempt List, which is an administrative procedure used by the NFL while a matter is being reviewed," Jacobs' lawyers, David Z. Chesnoff, Richard A. Schonfeld and Clarence F. Duchac III, said in a statement on Sunday, obtained by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
"It is not a final determination. Josh respects the NFL process, the Packers, and his coaches and teammates. He looks forward to his return to the team and the NFL."
Jacobs attended and participated in the entirety of Green Bay's training camp outside of time he missed due to a groin injury.
Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters on Friday following his team's final preseason game that he fully anticipated Jacobs "being a member of our team" but that he could not comment on Jacobs' potential availability for their regular-season opener against the Vikings on Sept. 13.
"I can't really comment on that because I don't know," LaFleur said on Friday.
Jacobs, 28, is entering his third campaign with the Packers, who signed him as a free agent in 2024.
The 24th overall pick of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders, Jacobs is a three-time Pro Bowler with 7,803 career rushing yards and 74 rushing touchdowns. He led the NFL in rushing in 2022 with the Raiders.
Last season, Jacobs produced 929 yards and 13 touchdowns for Green Bay, which has Jacobs under contract through the 2027 season.
In Jacobs' absence, LaFleur and the Packers are likely to look for larger contributions from running backs MarShawn Lloyd, Chris Brooks and Kaleb Johnson, whom they acquired in trade with the Steelers on Sunday.
