What You Need To Know
1) A new challenge has reared its head just ahead of Buccaneers training camp: Find an early season replacement for Tristan Wirfs. The All-Pro left tackle underwent knee surgery on July 8 and is likely to begin the season on the physically unable to perform list, which would sideline him at least four games. There's no replacing the only player in NFL history who has earned All-Pro honors at both tackle positions, but the silver lining is there's plenty of time to prepare. Currently on the left tackle depth chart are veteran Charlie Heck, a newcomer, and undrafted rookie Benjamin Chukwuma, but perhaps a temporary reshuffling is in order. Will Luke Goedeke try his hand at a tackle switch or will left guard Ben Bredeson, another newcomer, man the position? It's too early to tell now, but figuring it out will be a camp priority. Tampa begins the 2025 season with two road games and hosts the defending Super Bowl champions in Week 4 with Wirfs likely out.
2) The Buccaneers surged toward their fourth consecutive NFC title last season thanks to balanced offense that consistently put up points. The unit returns in 2025 largely unchanged barring the availability of Wirfs, but one other facet of the offense that could be interesting over the next few months is how the depth chart shakes out at wide receiver. With Mike Evans leading the way, Chris Godwin's health and potential return to form is the first item to monitor. The Bucs are hopeful the veteran WR will be ready for Week 1 after a brutal ankle dislocation disrupted a fantastic season in 2024, but the club seems to be prepared either way. That's where the head-scratching begins. Tampa selected Emeka Egbuka with the 19th-overall pick and the Ohio State product seems poised for the slot role, especially with Godwin's guidance. Jalen McMillan came on strong late last season and is certainly poised for more playing time in Year 2. Add in veteran Sterling Shepard, Trey Palmer and seventh-rounder Tez Johnson to the mix and therein lies a good problem to have for the Bucs.
3) Haason Reddick was the biggest offseason addition for a Buccaneers team that is in need of pressure off the edges (defensive tackles Vita Vea and Calijah Kancey led the team in sacks in 2024). Following a lengthy contract squabble that spilled into the regular season, Reddick's lone campaign with the Jets was one to forget, but a new beginning in Tampa Bay could be what the two-time Pro Bowler needs to return to form. Reddick, who previously had four consecutive 10-plus sack seasons before 2024, joins an aggressive Todd Bowles scheme that will lean on his pass-rushing talents and bring him opportunity to cash in on his one-year deal. There's also a fourth-round pick to watch. David Walker, the highest NFL draftee ever from Central Arkansas, had coaches buzzing after rookie minicamp.
