Brock Purdy's outlook for Week 2 is worsening by the day.
Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Wednesday that Purdy's chance of playing in San Francisco's game on Sunday at New Orleans is "a long shot" and that the quarterback could be dealing with a multi-week issue.
Purdy suffered a toe injury in the 49ers' thrilling Week 1 win over the Seattle Seahawks, Shanahan told reporters on Monday, as well as a left shoulder issue. The toe injury is the more serious of the two, Shanahan said Monday, and the combination will keep Purdy from participating in Wednesday's practice.
If Purdy cannot play, veteran backup and 2021 first-round pick Mac Jones is next on San Francisco's depth chart. Jones played in 10 games in a similar role for Jacksonville last season, including seven starts.
San Francisco will already play the Week 2 game without tight end George Kittle, who suffered a hamstring injury in the second quarter of Sunday's game and landed on injured reserve this week.
Purdy began his 2025 season by completing 26 of 35 passes for 277 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the victory over Seattle. Niners fans will hold out hope Purdy can recover quickly over the next few days. If not, it'll be Jones' job for the day.
