The Philadelphia Eagles are 4-0 to open the season. Based on the consternation surrounding the offense, an onlooker might think they were 0-4.
The Eagles offense has been a slug thus far, with a woeful Week 4 second half in which Jalen Hurts didn't complete a pass and the group generated 14 yards of offense on seven possessions (not counting the intentional safety on the final play of the game). The group went three-and-out five times, and their only points came on a short field following a Buccaneers' fumble.
The passing offense has been tough to watch in Philly, despite employing A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, tight end Dallas Goedert and running back Saquon Barkley.
The Eagles have averaged just 138.0 passing yards per game over their first four tilts in 2025, the second-fewest in the NFL, behind only the Titans (0-4 W-L). They're one of only three teams since 1980 to start 4-0 despite averaging fewer than 140 passing YPG, per NFL Research. The others: 2004 Falcons (11-5, lost NFC Championship Game at Eagles) and 2003 Panthers (11-5, lost Super Bowl XXXVIII vs. Patriots).
Offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo said Tuesday that having a lot of mouths to feed is a good problem, not a hindrance to the operation.
"It's a great problem, right? Because some teams don't have what we have," he said, via the team's official transcript. "So it is a great problem and really the guys have been great with me. I've been around here for a while, so obviously I know them a little bit differently, but they all want to win and that's the number one thing. They all want to win. They'll do anything for the team to win.
"So whether it's somebody's getting the ball, somebody's not when you watch it at times, there's guys being excited for other guys when they're making plays and that's all we can really ask for. It's just like, hey, we all want to win. We're on the same page. We know it may be different from play to play or from game to game, but we want to win."
The biggest concern in Philly is the mental and emotional state of Brown, who was once again ineffective. The star receiver had two catches for seven yards on nine targets in Week 4, his fewest yards in a game with six-plus targets in his career. Brown has generated fewer than 30 receiving yards in three of four games played.
After the game, Brown posted on social media. "If you're not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don't make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way."
The Philly staff has downplayed Brown's post.
"A.J. and I have a great relationship just throughout the years being here," Patullo said. "We spent a lot of time together, so as far as communication and getting to him and I have had no problem. I know where his heart is, where he lies. He wants to win, so he feels like he can do everything and anything to help us at all times. So as far as I'm concerned, him and I are in a good spot."
Until the Eagles offense starts churning like it did during last year's Super Bowl run, heat on Patullo will remain. The pressure is there even with an undefeated record. Imagine how hot it might get for the OC if the Eagles actually lose a game or four.
