Browns rookie QB Shedeur Sanders strains oblique during practice, unlikely to play Saturday vs. Eagles

Shedeur Sanders' preseason progression came to a halt on Wednesday.

The Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback strained his oblique during Wednesday's practice and is unlikely to play in Saturday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, the team announced. Sanders will not practice on Thursday and is considered day to day.

Sanders suffered the oblique injury while throwing in the early portion of practice.

The injury bug has been a frequent guest in Cleveland's four-man quarterback competition this summer, first affecting Kenny Pickett (hamstring) before spreading to fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel (hamstring), which left 40-year-old Joe Flacco and Sanders as the two remaining healthy options entering the Browns' preseason opener against the Panthers last week.

Cleveland added another arm in familiar face Tyler Huntley last week but gave Sanders the majority of the snaps in their win over Carolina, affording the rookie an opportunity to take 45 snaps in an impressive debut performance in which he threw two TD passes.

As Gabriel and Pickett continued to work their way back to full strength and participation -- Gabriel returned to 11-on-11 drills Wednesday -- Sanders was in line to receive plenty of snaps in Cleveland's Week 2 preseason game at Philadelphia.

With Sanders likely sidelined, the Browns might once again have to call an audible when determining how they'll divide up their quarterback reps in what is becoming a complicated picture beyond the presence of Flacco.

Cleveland kicks off against the Eagles on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on NFL Network.
