Three biggest takeaways
- Fast start on the horizon. Denver's defense was one of the best in the league last season, when it led the NFL in sacks and finished third in points allowed. So, who do the Broncos open this season against in the first two weeks? Week 1 offers a matchup with the Titans, who will be relying on first overall pick Cam Ward as their quarterback. Week 2 presents a meeting with the Colts, who are undoubtedly hoping third-year pro Anthony Richardson can beat out Daniel Jones in a quarterback competition and play consistently enough to keep the franchise from giving up on him. Both of those games could get ugly fast.
- A potential reunion with Russ. The Broncos started remaking their roster when they decided to eat the salary of former quarterback Russell Wilson. They didn't face Wilson when he played in Pittsburgh last season (Justin Fields quarterbacked the Steelers' Week 2 win in Denver), but Russ might very well be the starter for the Giants when Denver hosts them in Week 7. It's fair to say the Broncos were right to dump Wilson, especially because head coach Sean Payton clearly wasn't a fan. But that doesn't mean there won't be some high drama involved if the quarterback is playing in this contest.
- Get the Christmas list ready. That meeting between the Broncos and Chiefs in Kansas City on Christmas should be intense. Denver lost in Kansas City on a last-second blocked field-goal try last season. Payton also felt so confident in his team's development that he openly said the Broncos would've loved to have met the Chiefs in the postseason. Sounds like Denver is feeling itself. The Broncos will have a great chance to prove themselves late in the year.
NFL Research note
From September 8 through October 18, the Broncos will only play one game in Denver.

Three biggest takeaways
- Super Bowl rematch comes early. The Eagles whipped the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX by a score of 40-22, and it wasn't even that close. Now we get another meeting between these two teams -- on Sept. 14 -- in what is becoming something of a rivalry. The Chiefs beat the Eagles in the Super Bowl three seasons ago, with Kansas City wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster taunting some Philadelphia players on social media after the contest. The Eagles won a regular-season game in Kansas City in 2023, with Philly head coach Nick Sirianni taunting fans on the way out of Arrowhead Stadium. What are the chances there is some bad blood brewing when these two hook up again?
- Heavyweight matchups. It's always fun when the best quarterbacks in the league meet during the regular season, and this year will be no different for Kansas City. Patrick Mahomes will battle with Lamar Jackson's Ravens in Week 4 and Josh Allen's Bills in Week 9. Those three players have won the last three league MVPs, and Mahomes has beaten both in the past two AFC title games. Don't miss these contests. You'd regret it.
- Christmas belongs to the Chiefs. This will be third straight year that Kansas City will play a game on Dec. 25, as the Chiefs will host Denver this time around. The Chiefs won in Pittsburgh on Christmas last year and lost at home to Las Vegas in 2023. There used to be questions about how teams would handle playing games on this date. The Chiefs can now be classified as experts in this new tradition.
NFL Research note
The Chiefs lead the NFL with seven prime-time games in 2025, currently tying 2023 Bills for the most ever in a single season.

Three biggest takeaways
- Youth movement. There is some good news and some bad news for the start of the Raiders' season. The good news is that five of their first seven games could come against teams starting quarterbacks with two or fewer years of professional experience (New England, Washington, Chicago, Indianapolis and Tennessee). The bad news is that the Commanders have a burgeoning superstar under center in Jayden Daniels, while the Bears have created a much better supporting cast for Caleb Williams, the top overall pick in last year's draft. We'll see how this goes …
- Brace yourself. The final six weeks of the season will not be easy for Las Vegas. Starting on Nov. 30, the Raiders will see the Chargers, Broncos, Eagles, Texans, Giants and Chiefs. Aside from the Giants, every one of those teams should be thinking about making the playoffs. Oh, yeah -- the Chargers, Eagles and Texans will all be road games.
- Born to run. There's no secret about how Las Vegas wants to play offense. Head coach Pete Carroll loves the run game and the team's first-round pick was running back Ashton Jeanty. With that in mind, it's hard to not look at the Raiders' early schedule and see the potential for plenty of ground-and-pound. Five of their first six opponents ranked in the bottom third of the NFL in rush defense last year (New England, Washington, Chicago, Indianapolis and Tennessee).
NFL Research note
The Raiders open this campaign in New England, where limited partner Tom Brady played 20 seasons and won six Super Bowls.

Three biggest takeaways
- Home cooking. The Chargers should be ecstatic about their home schedule. They play five teams that made the playoffs last year but don't compete in the AFC West. All five of those opponents -- Washington, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Houston -- will come to Los Angeles to face the Chargers. That's a hell of an advantage when you're trying to continue the momentum that came from last season's postseason appearance. In fact, the Chiefs and Broncos will be the only teams Los Angeles will face on the road that had a winning record in 2024.
- Michigan memories. Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh and Minnesota quarterback J.J. McCarthy won a national championship together in their final season at Michigan in 2023. They'll be reunited when the Vikings travel to Los Angeles in Week 8 for a Thursday night showdown. Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter held the same position on that Michigan team, so he's quite familiar with McCarthy's strengths and weaknesses. It will be intriguing to see how the Bolts try to frustrate a quarterback that their top coaches know so well.
- Bye, bye, bye. The Chargers don't get their bye until Week 12, but they shouldn't be upset about that. They'll see the Eagles, Chiefs, Texans and Broncos in four of their last five games. Those matchups likely will play a huge role in Harbaugh's quest to hit the postseason in each of his first two years with Los Angeles. They're also guaranteed to be physical games, coming against four of the best defenses in the league from last season.
NFL Research note
The Chargers are set to play on four different days, with the possibility of a fifth, if their Week 17 game (currently TBD) takes place on Saturday.
