Will Allen re-signs with Pittsburgh Steelers

Will Allen is back with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The veteran safety has re-signed with the team, per a Monday press release, adding much-needed depth to the backend of coach Mike Tomlin's defense. ESPN first had the news on Friday.

Pittsburgh's need at the position magnified Thursday night after eight-time Pro Bowl selection Troy Polamaluannounced that he would retire after 12 seasons with the Steelers.

Third-year backstop Shamarko Thomas remains the candidate to start in Polamalu's place across from up-and-down veteran Mike Mitchell. Allen, though, was in the team's back pocket all along to return if and when Polamalu hung up the cleats.

Allen, 32, started four games for the Steelers last season after previous stops with the Cowboys and Buccaneers. Nearing the end of his career, he returns to Pittsburgh as a dose of depth and little more.
