Terry McLaurin is taking his desires for an extension to the next level.
McLaurin, who's currently a training camp hold-in, is requesting a trade from the Washington Commanders as contract negotiations have stalled and there's been no progress, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.
There's no guarantee general manager Adam Peters and the Commanders will oblige McLaurin's request, but it's a stern move from the veteran wide receiver, who's clearly grown frustrated with the lack of a resolution.
The 29-year-old McLaurin is entering the final season of a three-year deal with $15.5 million in base salary due and just $2.8 million in guaranteed money.
He's made no secret of his desire for a new deal and taken a hardline stance that's apparently not softened the Commanders brass' approach.
McLaurin reported late to training camp on Sunday and was subsequently placed on the team's physically unable to perform list. Prior to that he was absent from organized team activities and mandatory minicamp.
On July 15, McLaurin expressed his frustration to the media as talks had been paused for more than a month at that juncture and have clearly failed to heat up.
McLaurin, who's coming off his second Pro Bowl campaign and his fifth straight 1,000-yard season, is -- or was -- set to lead a WR room that includes Deebo Samuel, Noah Brown, Michael Gallup and Luke McCaffrey, among others. Washington acquired Samuel via trade this offseason. Consequently, Samuel is among a throng of notable wide receivers over the past few years who have requested trades amid contract squabbles such as his former San Francisco 49ers teammate Brandon Aiyuk and Cincinnati Bengals wideout Tee Higgins. None of those three were traded at the time and deals were eventually worked out.
Could this end differently?
McLaurin turns 30 in September and there are plenty of squads that could use a top-flight wide receiver, from the Los Angeles Chargers to the Las Vegas Raiders to the San Francisco 49ers to the New England Patriots and plenty in between.
However, this is hardly how Washington wants to follow up a splendid 12-5 2024 campaign in which the team returned to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since the 1991 season. As quarterback Jayden Daniels turned in a rookie campaign for the ages, McLaurin was unsurprisingly his go-to receiver. Despite any age concerns, it would seem the Commanders wouldn't want to disrupt the chemistry.
The McLaurin-Commanders impasse has reached another chapter and unrest remains in D.C.
