Stevie Brown agrees to deal with Houston Texans

The Giants must really be confident in their plan at safety.

According to NFL Media's Kimberly Jones, the team's former standout safety Stevie Brown has agreed to terms with the Houston Texans. Brown had eight picks in a breakout 2012 campaign before tearing his ACL in 2013.

The Giants balked on re-signing Brown in part because of a regression in 2014. The hard-hitting safety was still recovering from a torn ACL and was replaced by rookie fifth-round pick Nat Berhe.

That was before the team cleaned house at the position, also allowing Antrel Rolle to head off to Chicago.

Berhe, Cooper Taylor, Chykie Brown and converted corner Bennett Jackson are the team's current options at safety.

If it looks like desperate times, general manager Jerry Reese doesn't want to hear it. The two-time Super Bowl winner has gone into the season two years in a row with a perceived void of talent at a certain position.

Last year, it was tight end Larry Donnell, a converted Grambling quarterback, who ended up with six touchdown catches.

The gamble may work, but in the meantime, the Giants are letting go of a quality run-stopper and play-making center fielder who will have his first full offseason in more than two years.

If he came at a decent price, Texans defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel may have gotten a steal.
