Just hours after the Colts fired him as their running backs coach, Gene Huey received an offer from the Minnesota Vikings for the same position, *The Indianapolis Star* reported Wednesday.
Huey, who coached more regular-season games (304) than any assistant for the Colts, told The Star he was caught off guard by the firing.
"I was surprised," Huey said. "I think people can look at what I've done here. I feel like I've contributed and the people I've coached and been responsible for have produced."
Vikings coach Leslie Frazier knows Huey from Frazier's days as a Colts assistant. Huey, 63, is weighing the offer against retiring early, The Star reported.
The Colts' ground game has struggled the past three seasons, ranking 29th (92.7 yards per game) in 2010, partly because of injuries at running back and on the offensive line. However, Huey also coached four different backs to 1,000-yard seasons, including NFL Network analyst Marshall Faulk, Edgerrin James, Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai.
