Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams put up a career-high 1,299 rushing yards in 2024, but lacked the big plays we saw from other top rushers.
Williams ranked seventh in rushing yards last season, but it was mostly due to volume (316 carries, third-most in the league). His 4.1 yards per carry were tied for 30th among running backs. Stunningly, Williams generated just two rushes over 20-plus yards last season.
The Rams, who ranked 29th in explosive runs last season, are hoping to get more big plays out of the backfield in 2025.
Running backs coach Ron Gould said he's already noticed more blastoff from Williams during offseason workouts.
"The first thing that stood out to us was his explosiveness," Gould told the team's official website. "One of the things (I noticed) was just his ability to stay grounded through some of his runs that was really, really evident in the work that he's put in, so really, really pleased with that."
Per the team's website, Williams and agent Drew Rosenhaus have had an ongoing dialogue with the Rams' front office about a potential extension this offseason. Williams enters the final year of his rookie deal searching for a new contract. Despite the impasse, the running back attended voluntary work this offseason to aid the rest of the RB room.
"You talk about leadership, that's what that's all about," Gould said, "So he's done a great job of uniting the guys, bringing everybody together, and making sure that we all stay on the same page."
Williams is seeking an extension after carrying the Rams' ground game last season. He generated 1,299 of L.A.'s 1,765 total rushing yards.
In addition to getting more explosive plays this season, the Rams will probably look to lighten Williams' load. 2024 third-round pick Blake Corum could see more work after just 58 carries last season. Training camp will give a good indication of the role fourth-round pick Jarquez Hunter could play this season. Gould called speed Hunter's "superpower," which is something the Rams could use out of the backfield to help generate more big plays.
