Austin Ekeler is returning to Washington.
The Commanders are expected to sign the free-agent running back to their 53-man roster, pending a physical, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo reported Monday morning, per sources.
Ekeler worked out for the Carolina Panthers last week, but instead he lands back with his former club.
The 31-year-old running back played just two games last season before tearing his Achilles. Now fully healed, he'll rejoin the club for which he spent the past two seasons.
Famously an undrafted free agent, Ekeler spent his first seven seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers, becoming a dual-threat demon. He moved to D.C. in 2024, where injuries kept him to 410 rushing yards on 91 totes with four touchdowns and 404 receiving yards on 40 catches over 14 games.
Ekeler joins a backfield that hasn't found consistency through three weeks. Jacory Croskey-Merritt leads the way with 142 rushing yards on 47 carries (3.02 YPC) with one TD. Rachaad White has earned 100 rushing yards on 22 carries and added 51 receiving yards and a TD on nine catches.
