New York Jets release Brady Quinn, plan to re-sign him

The New York Jets are dropping one of their quartet of quarterbacks, at least for now.

The Jets are releasing quarterback Brady Quinn on Saturday, NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport reported. Quinn signed with New York earlier this week.

ESPN first reported the news.

Rapoport added that the Jets intend to re-sign Quinn on Monday after his contract isn't fully guaranteed for the season. It is not a surprising move, and makes prudent sense for Gang Green.

Even with Mark Sanchez injured, it was unlikely Quinn -- with his limited knowledge of the playbook -- would have been active for Sunday's season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Jets had until 4 p.m. ET on Saturday to cut Quinn before his contract became guaranteed.

If he's re-signed, Quinn could be cut again -- once Sanchez returns from his shoulder injury.

UPDATE:The Jets announced Quinn's release Saturday.
