The Lions have made a member of their secondary a primary priority.
The team announced Sunday that it has signed safety Glover Quin to a contract extension through the 2019 season. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reports it's a two-year extension worth $13 million with $9.5 million in guarantees, per a source informed.
"Glover is one of our team leaders, and throughout his career has been a consummate professional on and off the field," Lions Executive Vice President and General Manager Bob Quinn said in a media release. "We are thrilled that he will be a Lion for the next three seasons.
"I also want to thank Glover and his representatives for their work in making this contract extension a reality."
The 31-year-old Quin joined the Lions on a five-year, $23.5 million pact in 2013, back when he was 27. Considering his ripe age and the fact he was heading into a contract year, this payday seems like the perfect time for Quin to cash in for his efforts in Detroit.
Last season, the safety had 55 solo tackles and forced three turnovers. Quin made the Pro Bowl in 2014 with a career-high seven interceptions. It's his durability, however, that's been his top trait. Quin's streak of 116 consecutive starts in the regular season is the highest among all active safeties.
The Lions have extended Quin, cornerback Darius Slay, tailback Theo Riddick and punter Sam Martin all in the past year. The team has bigger fish to fry now, though, with the hope of locking up franchise cornerstones Matthew Stafford and Ezekiel Ansah for the long haul in the near future.
