The Dallas Cowboys have room for a backup quarterback with the exit of veteran Tony Romo -- starter Dak Prescott and reserve Kellen Moore are the only QBs on the roster -- and they got a look at six candidates, albeit mostly unheralded ones, on Friday.
Baylor's Seth Russell, who has spent the offseason recovering from an ankle dislocation that ended his season last year, threw for the Cowboys staff on "Dallas Day" at team headquarters along with SMU's Matt Davis, Virginia Tech's Jerod Evans, Tulsa's Dane Evans, West Virginia's Skyler Howard and UT-San Antonio's Jared Johnson, per the Dallas Morning News. "Dallas Day" is the Cowboys' annual workout for local prospects.
Russell threw for 2,100 yards in each of two injury shortened seasons for the Bears. A neck injury ended his junior season after seven games. For his career, he threw 60 touchdown passes with 18 interceptions. Davis was a late entry to the draft field after an unsuccessful attempt to attain a sixth year of NCAA eligibility, while the Hokies' Evans was an early draft entry after only one season as a starter in college.
The Cowboys won't host any quarterbacks among their allotted 30 pre-draft visits, per the report.
If that's any indication, some of these possibilities could be more viable for the Cowboys than quarterbacks that would demand a high draft pick. The draft will be held April 27-29 in Philadelphia.
