We have ourselves another training camp kicker battle.
The New York Giants announced Tuesday the team signed veteran booter Mike Nugent.
Nugent enters his 13th NFL season and will battle Aldrick Rosas, a 22-year-old kicker who has never played a pro game, for the starting job.
Nugent returns to New York where he played the first four years of his career with the Jets. The 35-year-old kicker spent the past seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals. Nugent owns a career 80.8 percent field-goal rate. The veteran, however, struggled with the longer extra point last season, missing six of 29 PATs, leading to his release from Cincy in December.
This is the part of the post where we would note Rosas' attributes, but the slate is blank for the infantile kicker. He spent last offseason with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted rookie out of Southern Oregon. Rosas made his only field-goal attempt, from 33 yards. He was then waived. The Giants signed Rosas to a reserve/future contract in January.
After spending the offseason as the only kicker in camp, now Rosas will have competition for the starting gig.
