Private memorial service for Colts owner Jim Irsay to be held June 2

A private memorial will be held for the late Colts owner Jim Irsay on June 2 in Indianapolis, the team announced on Wednesday.

Details regarding a public tribute for Irsay will be announced at a later date, according to the club.

Irsay, who had presided over the franchise since 1997, died at the age of 65 on May 21. His impact across Indianapolis and the league at large was felt in the aftermath of Irsay's passing.

A number of Colts players and coaches wore shirts featuring an old image of Irsay powerlifting to Wednesday's organized team activities, including head coach Shane Steichen.

"I'd like to start off with condolences to the entire Irsay family … prayers and thoughts with them during this time," an emotional Steichen said following Wednesday's practice.

"A lot of you guys knew Mr. Irsay really well and covered this team for a long time. I was with him for two years. Phenomenal human being. You guys know how generous he was. I told the team last week, every time I talked to him in the building, on the phone, every time. He would always tell me at the end, 'coach whatever you need for this team and this organization. We got you.' That was the man he was. … We're going to honor this season for Jim and we're going to win for Jim this year."

Irsay became the youngest general manager in NFL history when he assumed the role in 1984 at the age of 25. Irsay took over as the team's principal owner in 1997 and saw the Colts advance to the playoffs 16 times, win two AFC championships and one Super Bowl during his tenure.

The Colts announced on Tuesday that the team would wear a signature jersey patch honoring Irsay throughout the 2025 NFL season.
