Oakland Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr won't see action in Friday's preseason tussle in Green Bay.
Coach Dennis Allen said Carr has been cleared from a concussion, but the quarterback still has sore, bruised ribs and the team doesn't want to expose him to injury, per NFL Media's Steve Wyche.
The rookie signal-caller exited last week's game in the fourth quarter after suffering a blow. Carr pointed to his midsection, indicating an apparent rib injury.
Following the game Allen told reporters it was a concussion that forced Carr from the contest.
Carr has the potential to be the Raiders' quarterback of the future, once the team moves on from its Matt Schaub-project. However, Allen wants to make sure the rookie is healthy before putting him back under fire.
Here are some other injuries we are following Thursday:
- Jadeveon Clowney sat out of Thursday's practice after leaving Wednesday's session early. The Texans don't believe the injury is serious.
"Yeah he's doing fine," Bill O'Brien said, per the team's official website. "We just held him out today and he'll be fine."Â
- Eagles running back LeSean McCoy went in for an X-ray on his right thumb during Thursday's preseason game against the Steelers. The Eagles later confirmed that the X-ray was negative.
- Eagles wide receiver Arrelious Benn suffered a head injury and missed the remainder of the contest.Â
- Steelers linebackers Jason Worilds and Sean Spence both exited with knee injuries and didn't return. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports that Worilds left as a precaution and that his knee is structurally fine, according to a source who spoke to the linebacker. Spence suffered a PCL injury to his right knee. Cameron Heyward left the game with an ankle sprain.
- The Eagles' Brandon Boykin sat out against the Steelers. The third-year corner has a slight hamstring injury. The Eagles also played without wide receiver Josh Huff (shoulder) and running back Chris Polk (hamstring).
- The Baltimore Ravens will again be without their top three corners when they take on the Washington RedskinsSaturday. John Harbaugh confirmed Jimmy Smith (chest), Asa Jackson (ankle) and Lardarius Webb (back) will not play.
- Chiefs linebacker Joe Mays is headed for wrist surgery, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan. Mays suffered the injury in last week's loss to the Carolina Panthers, and was expected to start at inside linebacker alongside Derrick Johnson. His status for the season opener is in serious doubt.
- The Redskins are uncertain about defensive end Stephen Bowen being ready for the beginning of the season. The lineman started 10 games last year, but is coming off microfracture surgery on his right knee. According to coach Jay Gruden, Bowen could be a candidate to start the year on the PUP list.
- Redskins nose tackle Barry Cofield returned to the field Thursday. Cofield sat out practice on Wednesday with a sore groin muscle.
- The Broncos got receiver Emmanuel Sanders back at practice Thursday, per USA Today's Lindsay Jones. The free agent acquisition has been dealing with a quad injury.
- Denver also got good news regarding cornerback Chris Harris. He'll be cleared for full participation in practice next week and is on target to play Week 1. Harris tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in the playoffs last year.
- Guard Jerome Clary and wide receiver Vincent Brown still aren't practicing for the Chargers, according to U-T San Diego. Clary hasn't practiced since early January and has undergone surgeries on his shoulder and hip. Brown strained a calf muscle last month.
- Chargers 2014 first-round pick Jason Verrett will see his first NFL game action on Sunday against the 49ers, according to U-T San Diego. The cornerback has been recovering from a shoulder injury.
- Cowboys linebacker DeVonte Holloman's career is likely over after suffering another neck injury in last week's preseason game.
