Injuries: 'Banged up' Vincent Jackson misses practice

Vincent Jackson missed practice on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter told reporters it wasn't a veteran day off for Jackson. "He's a little banged up," Koetter said of Jackson, per ESPN.

The coach didn't get into specifics on Jackson's injury.

The 33-year-old receiver missed six games last season due to injury. 2015 marked the first season since 2010 (in which he held out 10 games in a contract dispute) that Jackson didn't break the 1,000-yard barrier.

Entering the final year of his contract, Jackson is expected to play second fiddle to Mike Evans in the Bucs' receiving corps, providing Jameis Winston with two big targets. Jackson could also see an increased time in the slot this season.

First the veteran needs to get healthy.

Here are some other injury notes we are following Tuesday:

  1. Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz, attempting to rediscover his game-changing form, was held out of practice Tuesday due to a tight groin, head coach Ben McAdoo said. Cruz has struggled to remain relevant in Giants camp thus far, being passed up on the depth chart by rookie Sterling Shepard.

Giants linebacker Keenan Robinson (groin) and safety Nat Berhe (hamstring) are also not practicing Tuesday.

  1. Patriots receiver Julian Edelman threw down his helmet in disgust and had his left leg looked at by a trainer during practice. The wideout returned from the physically unable to perform list Sunday after having an offseason procedure to reinsert a screw in his left foot from a previous operation. NFL Media's Mike Garafolo reported tests on Edelman showed he did not suffer a setback in his return from foot surgery, according to two people informed of the results of the evaluations. Edelman's status going forward is day-to-day.

Defensive end Rob Ninkovich suffered a torn tricep, Rapoport reported. Ninkovich did not tear his tricep tendon, per Rapoport, just his tricep muscle. If all goes well, the DE could return by October.

  1. Jets defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) has been activated off the PUP list and was limited on his first day back.
  1. Miami Dolphins receiver DeVante Parker returned to the field after missing five practices. The breakout candidate has been dealing with a hamstring injury. Coach Adam Gase is unsure whether Parker will play in Friday's preseason opener.
  1. After missing just one practice with a soft tissue injury, first-round pick Ronnie Stanley returned to Baltimore Ravens workouts. Cornerback Maurice Canady also is back.

Coach John Harbaugh said all five players on the PUP list -- Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Steve Smith, Breshad Perriman and Lorenzo Taliaferro -- are expected to be ready for the Sept. 11 regular season opener. Harbaugh added Suggs is closest to returning.

  1. Eagles coach Doug Pederson said defensive ends Marcus Smith and Mike Martin, running back Wendell Smallwood, defensive back Malcolm Jenkins and offensive tackle Jason Peters won't play Thursday against the Buccaneers. Pederson added that Peters will warm up in uniform before the game, but nothing more.

Linebacker Najee Goode will start in place of Mychal Kendricks, who left practice with hamstring soreness. As for injured receiver Jordan Matthews (knee), Pederson said he initially thought the injury was a lot worse than it turned out to be. Matthews has a bone bruise.

  1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Dirk Koetter said guard J.R. Sweezy saw a specialist in California concerning his back/calf injury, and there is no timetable for his return. Sources informed of the visit told NFL Media's Mike Garafolo that Sweezy received a positive report from the specialists and hopes to return soon.
  1. Indianapolis Colts defensive end Kendall Langford underwent arthroscopic knee surgery after being diagnosed with chondral defect of the knee and will be out three to four weeks, coach Chuck Pagano said. Center Ryan Kelly is returning Tuesday, while tackle Joe Reitz is day-to-day, Pagano added. Punter Pat McAfee is day-to-day with a knee injury.
  1. Arizona Cardinals receiver John Brown (concussion) won't play in Friday's preseason game against the Raiders, even if he clears the concussion protocol, head coach Bruce Arians said.
  1. Seattle Seahawks running back Thomas Rawlshas been off the PUP list since Sunday, but he's taking it slow in practice. Rawls, expected to be the lead back in Seattle's running game, is returning from a broken ankle and ligament damage suffered last season. Coach Pete Carroll said "it's going to be a while" before Rawls is back at 100 percent.

Carroll added that tight end Jimmy Graham is "right on the edge" of returning.

  1. Cleveland Browns receiver Corey Coleman (hamstring) sat out his third-straight practice. Center Cam Erving wore a sleeve on his left non-snapping elbow during team drills.
  1. Packers tight end Jared Cook has been cleared after foot surgery, Mike McCarthy announced. Cook will return to practice tonight.
