With Jaxson Dart out for the regular season following his Friday surgery to repair meniscus and MCL damage, the New York Giants have turned to Jameis Winston under center.
But will the former No. 1 pick be Big Blue's season-long answer at quarterback?
New York is mulling the addition of a veteran signal-caller in the coming weeks, NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo and ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday.
Possible targets include free agents Jimmy Garoppolo and Brandon Allen, and backup QBs Justin Fields, Mac Jones, J.J. McCarthy and Gardner Minshew, NFL Network and ESPN reported.
Aside from Winston, Jake Haener is currently the only other QB on New York's roster.
Giants coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday that "all options are open" at QB, and the reported list of targets lends truth to that statement.
Garoppolo is the elder statesman of that group and would provide winning experience, but he hasn't played any meaningful football since a lone start in 2024, when he led the Rams to a Week 18 loss to Seattle after L.A. had already clinched the division.
The more interesting targets would be the younger Fields, Jones and McCarthy, former first-rounders and starters who have fallen out of favor. Jones played well in relief of Brock Purdy last season, while Fields and McCarthy lost their starting gigs over the last 12 months due to poor play and/or injury.
All of this QB speculation will be moot if Winston performs Sunday and going forward better than he did in replacing Dart in Week 2. The 32-year-old signal-caller completed 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards and an interception in a 28-6 defeat to the Rams after Dart exited with his knee injury.
Winston and the Giants (1-1) kick off against the Tennessee Titans (0-2) at 1 p.m. ET from MetLife Stadium.
