Atlanta's quarterback situation remains murky at best.
Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski is leaving open every possibility at the position for Week 2's home-opener against the Carolina Panthers, telling reporters Wednesday his staff is "not ruling anybody out."
"We will have a quarterback, yes, for this week," Stefanski said.
That includes Michael Penix Jr., Tua Tagovailoa, Cooper Rush and undrafted rookie Jack Strand. Theoretically, all could play. And it seems mid-week Stefanski isn't interested in revealing any additional information.
"I'm not trying to be coy," Stefanski said when pressed on whether Penix, who was inactive for Week 1, might become available. "I'm just not ruling anybody out. Continue to work through it. We're all on the same page between myself, the medical team, Mike. We'll work through all those things."
For Wednesday's record, Tagovailoa isn't practicing due to an oblique injury he suffered in practice last week. Penix and Rush will practice, per Stefanski, and Strand isn't being ruled out as a potential participant on Sunday in Atlanta.
This type of multifaceted update was never part of Stefanski's plan entering 2026. The Falcons understood they were approaching the new season with expected uncertainty due to Penix's recovery from his latest ACL injury, and that's why they signed Tagovailoa as veteran insurance. They didn't foresee Tagovailoa beginning camp with an injury -- prompting Atlanta to sign Rush out of necessity -- and suffering another injury just days before the regular season.
Penix's return could solve their problems. Atlanta isn't going to rush it in September, though; otherwise, Stefanski might have to play this game of cat and mouse all season long.
"I think you guys talked to Mike and Mike will explain what we're doing with the progression as he comes back," Stefanski explained. "Like I told you guys, I feel really good about the plan and where we are. I'm not gonna get into specific conversations with our players, but Mike is progressing and doing a good job. But we'll see how it goes."
For now, he'll repeat the same lines and remain vague. It wouldn't benefit him much to name a starter entering Week 2 anyway, especially after how uninspiring their offense was in Week 1 with Rush under center in a 20-13 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Eventually, though, the Falcons would like this chatter to subside and certainty to appear under center.
