Dolphins GM on not trading Jalen Ramsey during draft: 'We will make the deal at the appropriate time'

Jalen Ramsey remains a Miami Dolphin post-draft.

Two weeks ago, the cornerback and the Dolphins mutually agreed to seek a trade. With none coming to fruition over the weekend, the sides will continue considering their futures.

"We had conversations through the weekend with teams. Whenever it happens, we will make the deal at the appropriate time," general manager Chris Grier told reporters on Saturday, via the Miami Herald.

The draft was one potential touchstone for a Ramsey trade. With it passing without movement, the Dolphins' compensation for a player they handed a new contract last fall drops precipitously.

At this stage, it makes financial sense for Miami to wait until after June 1 to move Ramsey. A trade over the next month would result in $25.213 million of dead money hitting the cap. Waiting until after June 1 to execute a trade would reduce that figure by more than $18 million for 2025 by splitting the charge over multiple years.

Grier was asked if the plan was to wait until June 2 or after to move Ramsey.

"Whenever those opportunities arise," Miami will explore them, he responded.

Coach Mike McDaniel declined to discuss his relationship with Ramsey amid reports that he and the player didn't see eye-to-eye. The coach said he didn't want to take focus away from the players drafted. The non-answer speaks volumes about the current situation with Ramsey in South Beach.

Since the mutual decision to seek a trade was reported, Grier has discussed a Ramsey trade as an eventuality rather than a possibility. The question becomes, who might be a buyer, and how much of the corner's contract will the Dolphins have to eat to get a deal done? For now, the waiting continues.
