The Kansas City Chiefs have surprisingly waived a 2016 second-day draft pick just weeks into the season.
The team announced Wednesday they waived cornerback KeiVarae Russell. Russell was a third-round pick out of Notre Dame in this year's draft. It's not often a player drafted on the first two days doesn't make it to the end of his first season with the club that selected him. He was inactive for the Chiefs during their Week 1 win against the Chargers on Sunday.
"We felt it was the best thing to do for the Chiefs right now," coach Andy Reid said to the media Wednesday, adding it was a "football decision."
Russell is a talented player who could be scooped up off waivers by another team. If he makes it through waivers, it's conceivable the Chiefs bring him back as a member of the practice squad.
The Chiefs made a corresponding roster move, signing rookie linebacker Dezman Moses.
